The Design of Sampling Transects for Characterizing Water Quality in Estuaries

چکیده
The high spatial variability of estuaries poses a challenge for characterizing estuarine water quality. This problem was examined by conducting monthly high-resolution transects for several water quality variables (chlorophyll a, suspended particulate matter and salinity) in San Francisco Bay (California, U.S.A.). Using these data, six different ways of choosing station locations along a transect, in order to estimate mean conditions, were compared. In addition, 11 approaches to estimating the variance of the transect mean when stations are equally spaced were compared, and the relationship between variance of the estimated transect mean and number of stations was determined. The results provide guidelines for sampling along the axis of an estuary: (1) choose as many equally-spaced stations as practical; (2) estimate the variance of the mean ȳ by var ( ȳ)=(1/10n)Gj=2 (yj"yj"1), where y1, . . ., yn are the measurements at the n stations; and (3) attain the desired precision by adjusting the number of stations according to var( ȳ) 1/n. The inverse power of 2 in the last step is a consequence of the underlying spatial correlation structure in San Francisco Bay; more studies of spatial structure at other estuaries are needed to determine the generality of this relationship. ? 1997 Academic Press Limited

Sedimentological and Geomorphological Classification of Chabahar Coastal Area (Chabahar-Gawater)
In the present paper various transects perpendicular to Iranian Makran coasts (Chabahar-Gawater) were studied using satellite image processing, field observations, sandy shore profiling and grain size analysis to evaluate sedimentology and geomorphology of the area. Data revealed that the study area includes exposed rocky shores (52%), sandy shores (40%), and mud flats (8%) sheltered in estuari...
متن کاملSpatial variation of waterborne Escherichia coli - implications for routine water quality monitoring.
Escherichia coli are often used as faecal indicator bacteria (FIB) to provide a measure of microbial pollution in recreational and shellfish harvesting waters. However, although model forecasts for predicting the concentrations of FIB in surface waters are becoming more robust, they suffer from an inconsistency in quantification methods and an understanding of the spatial variation of FIB withi...
متن کاملAssessment of Spatial Structure of Groundwater Quality Variables Based on the Geostatistical Simulation
Our main objective in the present study was to assess the spatial variation of chemical and physical water properties. Prior to the design of groundwater quality monitoring networks, it is essential to investigate the spatial structure of the groundwater quality variables. A case study is presented which used ground water quality observations from groundwater domestic wells in the Dameghan, Ira...
متن کاملSpatial sampling design for sediment quality assessment in estuaries
Unusual difficulties are encountered when characterizing the spatial distribution of the properties that collectively define the state of estuaries. Due to the variability of these estuarine conditions, greater sampling efforts are often necessary to describe estuarine environments, as compared to other aquatic systems. That is why in coastal management studies, where the collection of data is ...
متن کاملAssessment of water quality in Blinaja River Basin (Kosovo) using the Canadian Water Quality Index (WQI)
Kosovo has limited natural water resources which should be well managed. This is recently realised through quantitative and qualitative monitoring of both surface and groundwater and by characterizing their quality according to their destination. In this paper, the Water Quality Index (WQI) developed by the Canadian Council of Environment Ministers (CCME WQI) was applied to evaluate the groundw...
